BiXX and Natalie Gioia Push Beyond Traditional Trance Arrangements with “Armenian Rhapsody”
Drawing from Yanni’s “Prelude” and the Armenian duduk, the October 9 release brings together cinematic orchestration, Armenian-language vocals, and BiXX’s signature uplifting trance production.
What began as an idea inspired by a live performance at the Acropolis has developed into one of the most elaborate collaborations between American trance DJ and producer BiXX and vocalist, composer, and pianist Natalie Gioia. Released October 9, 2026, “Armenian Rhapsody” draws upon a musical influence that BiXX had carried with him for years: the distinctive sound of the Armenian duduk featured in Yanni’s “Prelude.” His longstanding interest in the instrument eventually provided the starting point for a production that would take a considerably different direction once Gioia became involved.

From a Live Performance to an Original Production
“The original idea for this track came from Yanni’s track, ‘Prelude,’” BiXX explains. “It features one of the most beautiful sounding instruments in the world, the Armenian duduk.”
BiXX had already explored the influence of “Prelude” in a live setting, incorporating the composition into a custom introduction for one of his performances at Lumi. With “Armenian Rhapsody,” however, he wanted to develop something entirely his own, using the duduk as a central musical reference rather than simply revisiting the original piece. His earliest arrangement featured an extended breakdown in which the instrument played a particularly prominent role.
The approach soon revealed a challenge. The duduk’s commanding sound proved difficult to balance against Gioia’s vocal performance, with the two elements competing for space whenever they appeared together. BiXX responded by adjusting the instrument’s placement and intensity, allowing its phrases to emerge between the vocals rather than overpower them.
“What is wonderful about trance is we can bring in all kinds of native instrument sounds and concepts into the breakdown to make the track more unique and epic,” he says.
An Orchestral Contribution That Redefined the Track
Gioia’s involvement brought an unexpected transformation to the project. Collaborating with an orchestral specialist, she introduced a completely reimagined breakdown, replacing the original concept with an expansive composition built around her own melodies, chord progression, and vocal performance. She also undertook the process of studying Armenian to write and sing lyrics in the language, adding another layer to the record’s musical identity.
While the result immediately impressed BiXX, its length presented an unusual production dilemma. The new breakdown was more than twice the duration of what he already regarded as a lengthy section, making it difficult to incorporate into the familiar structure of a trance release intended for clubs and record labels.
“Natalie surprised me,” BiXX says. “When she first sent it to me, I was blown away, but I did not know what to do with it. The breakdown was so long—too long to play live and too long for most trance tracks and labels.”
Instead of asking Gioia to reduce the arrangement, BiXX ultimately decided that the surrounding production should accommodate what she had created.
“I quickly got my mind out of the negative thinking mode. Why not let Natalie be Natalie and build around this beautiful masterpiece?”
The finished breakdown places Gioia’s orchestral writing at the forefront, with the Armenian duduk assuming a more restrained supporting role. Its presence complements the vocal and instrumental passages, contributing to the cinematic atmosphere without disrupting their development. BiXX describes the result as “an orchestral, angelic cinematic experience,” drawing comparisons to the emotional scale of film music.
“The breakdown is all about triggering emotions and goosebumps.”

Finding the Freedom in an Unconventional Structure
The decision to preserve Gioia’s extended composition also influenced the identity of the record itself. Although BiXX had not initially intended to create a rhapsody, the contrasting musical passages and unusually long breakdown encouraged him to consider a more flexible approach to the arrangement.
Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” became an important reference during this process. BiXX recalled the well-known story surrounding the song’s length and the doubts about whether such an unconventional recording could succeed on radio. He recognized a similar creative question within his own project: whether to shorten the music to meet established expectations or allow its structure to become part of what distinguished it.
“I knew we needed to break the mold and make this a rhapsody of sorts,” he says. “A freeform musical composition with contrasting moods, melodies and emotional swings. The original idea had nothing to do with a rhapsody concept, but once Natalie did her part, it was my job to honor her brilliant work.”
That philosophy is reflected throughout the completed track. The opening introduces an uplifting three-note riff before giving way to Gioia’s extended orchestral passage. A different melody subsequently emerges as the energy builds toward the drop, followed by another riff during its final phrase. Rather than ending with an entirely separate musical idea, BiXX brings the original three-note motif back into the arrangement, connecting the closing moments with the beginning.
The return to that familiar melody is among his favorite details, providing a sense of continuity across the production’s contrasting sections. As BiXX puts it, “Many different melodies and sounds—the track is like a rhapsody.”
Six Collaborations and an Evolving Creative Understanding
The release represents approximately the sixth project BiXX and Gioia have developed together. Their connection began after BiXX discovered her vocals on Alex M.O.R.P.H.’s “The Reason,” with RAM Boon later facilitating their introduction. What followed was a series of collaborations through which the two artists gradually established a working process centered on creative independence.
For BiXX, an important part of that evolution has involved recognizing when to provide direction and when to allow Gioia to develop an idea without restrictions. Although he sometimes begins with a demo, musical reference, or written explanation, he has found that leaving the arrangement open to interpretation often produces results beyond his initial expectations.
“I give Natalie total creative freedom,” he says. “She makes my ideas much better. I try to be very careful about limiting Natalie’s creative direction in a track. Sometimes demos can box her in too much. My best success with Natalie is to let her do what she does best.”
Their previous collaboration “Beauty Within” illustrates how that approach can transform a personal concept into a finished production. BiXX originally envisioned the record as a tribute to his late mother, inspired by her lesson about the importance of inner beauty. After receiving the concept, Gioia wrote the lyrics and composed the breakdown, developing the emotional foundation of the track through her own musical interpretation.
A similar exchange shaped “Armenian Rhapsody,” although the scale of Gioia’s contribution required BiXX to reconsider the production more extensively than he had anticipated.
“We have a style and a process that, in my opinion, makes each new project better than the last,” he says. “Armenian Rhapsody may be my best track to date.”
A Different Approach Without Losing the BiXX Identity
Despite its extended orchestral passages and unconventional development, “Armenian Rhapsody” remains rooted in the uplifting trance style associated with BiXX. His productions have consistently emphasized melodic progression, emotionally driven breakdowns, and energetic drops. The distinction with this release lies in the greater freedom given to those elements and the way they interact throughout the arrangement.
BiXX is particularly attentive to the beginning of a record, believing that the opening should immediately offer listeners something compelling rather than simply serving as a functional introduction.
“I hate boring intros,” BiXX says. “So many trance tracks have boring intros. It’s like they don’t want to make the track too good too soon, but then it never gets good. If you start off great and keep getting better, then you have a listening experience.”
That thinking carries through the different stages of “Armenian Rhapsody.” The opening melody establishes its uplifting character, Gioia’s vocals introduce another emotional dimension, and the orchestral breakdown provides a contrast to the energy of the eventual drop. Each element serves a different purpose, yet BiXX considers them equally representative of his sound. Asked to identify the section that feels most distinctly his own, he compares the decision to choosing a favorite child: “All of them. Just differently.”
Across his career, BiXX has established a catalogue of uplifting and melodic trance releases, including Beatport Top 10 tracks “Marvelous Universe,” “Flight of Life,” “Above the Clouds,” “Yes I Can,” “Purpose,” “After Dark,” and “Trance at the Opera.” His achievements also include the Beatport #1 releases “Still We Rise” and “Victoria.” His music receives more than three million Spotify streams annually, while his catalogue has accumulated a reported 25 million total streams since 2019.
These milestones reflect an artistic philosophy that continues to guide his approach to production: music is the vehicle, inspiration is the message.
For all the technical and compositional decisions involved in creating “Armenian Rhapsody,” BiXX ultimately hopes its impact will be felt through the listening experience itself. He wants the contrasting melodies, orchestral passages, and uplifting energy to offer a temporary escape from everyday concerns.
“To be honest, I want them to be blown away and put the track on repeat,” he says. “I would hope they experience many emotions throughout the track and forget about life for just a short time. Then come back in a happier, more positive state of mind.”
